Plan B Is Here! A Novel Approach to Treating COVID-19 Using Nutritional and Oxidative Therapies

July 11, 2020

Plan B is here!
My partners and I treated 107 COVID-19 patients.  Our results were excellent:  one hospitalization, no deaths, and full recovery (minus two patients still suffering from somewhat minor lingering symptoms).  It was the most stressful time I have encountered in nearly 30 years of practicing medicine.  It was also the most thrilling time.  Before coronavirus made it to Michigan, I told my staff that we were ready for this. I stated, “For over 25 years, we have been practicing medicine for this situation.  We have a particularly good track record of treating influenza-like illnesses using natural therapies.  The first 25 years we were practicing for this very illness.   I believe our protocol for treating viral infections will work in patients who become

There Is Still Hope Out There…and We Are Taking Time Out To Re-Group

May 28, 2020

I want to let you know that we have been ordered by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to stop making any statements about our treatment protocols of Vitamins A, C & D, as well as nutritional IV’s, iodine, ozone and nebulization to support the immune system with respect to Coronavirus Diseases 2019 (COVID-19).
According to this letter:
“It is unlawful under the FTC Act, 15 U.S.C Sec. 41 et seq. to advertise that a product or service can prevent, treat, or cure human disease unless you possess competent and reliable scientific evidence, including, when appropriate, well-controlled human clinical studies, substantiating that the claims are true at the time they are made. For COVID-19, no such study is currently known to exist for

We Must Wear Face Masks? Show Me the Science Behind That!

April 28, 2020

Folks, I have been writing to you about COVID for over a month. It is been a painful time period for all of us. What is really sad is that too many political dictates are being fostered on us without any good scientific evidence to back them up. One of those requirements that has me irritated is the use of face coverings that I see so prevalent out there. When I go to Costco, 95% of the people in the store are wearing face masks. Why is that?
The Governor of Michigan recently released an edict requiring that citizens wear a face covering when in any enclosed public space. It specifically states, “Any individual able to medically tolerate a face covering must wear a covering over his or her nose and mouth—such as a homemade mask,

The Good News Is Still There: Death Rate for COVID Falling in New Study

April 21, 2020

These are tough times. The mainstream media (MSM—CNN, Fox, and nearly every other news station) is reporting 24/7 about COVID-19. We hear about every death in real time. We get daily updates about how many are infected and how many are dying. Listening to the MSM would have anyone believe that we have a plague on our hands that is not only infecting everyone, it is killing nearly everyone who becomes ill with it.
Folks, this is a perfect example of “Fake News.” COVID-19 is neither infecting everyone nor is it killing the vast majority who get infected.   I have been writing about his since the start of the crisis. The best advice I can give you is to turn off the news. I can’t stomach watching it. I have been treating patients

Fake COVID-19 Death Numbers and There Still Is Good News

April 16, 2020

We are past the worst of COVID-19. I have been following the numbers and, IMHO, we have passed the peak (or soon to pass the peak) of this illness and are on the downside. Unfortunately, there will still be more deaths as we still have many infected.
Last week in the office, I could sense the fear level lowering among my staff and patients. That is a good thing. Our natural fear level was much too high for COVID. This was being driven by the media who refused to share any good news about this epidemic and continually fanned the flames by promoting their doomsday predictions.
Recall that the original models predicted 1-2 million deaths. I told you that would not happen. Later, they lowered their predictions to 100-200,000. At that

85 COVID Patients at the Center for Holistic Medicine: Zero Hospitalizations and No Deaths

April 11, 2020

At my office, the Center for Holistic Medicine (CHM), we have had 85 COVID patients. At this time, no one has been hospitalized, no one has been diagnosed with pneumonia, and there have been no deaths.
There are five practitioners at CHM: Drs. Brownstein, Ng, Nusbaum, Jenny Drummond, PA, and Taylor Easson, NP. Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, I have been asking my partners how their COVID patients are doing. As of this week, we have had 85 patients either diagnosed with COVID or suspected COVID.  I am pleased to report that our patients are doing well with this illness. (Note, since new guidelines have come out stating that any suspected COVID patient can be diagnosed with COVID, I am lumping COVID and suspected COIVD

Coronavirus: The Good News is Still There But Not Reported By Mainstream Media

April 6, 2020

You wouldn’t know it, but there is still good news about COVID-19 out there. Listening to the media would make you believe that the sky is falling and we are all going to die from coronavirus.
Before I get into the good news, let me preface this article by stating that I am not minimizing the dangers of COVID-19. It is a serious illness as I have observed in both patients and friends. Thousands have died and, unfortunately, more deaths are coming. However, our fear level is much too high for this illness. Children are not dying in droves from this. Nor are children being maimed and paralyzed. This is not Ebola or hemorrhagic fever where the death rate is 50% or higher in those that get it. The final death rate from COVID-19 will

What To Avoid–Ibuprofen–and What To Take

March 16, 2020

Our misery continues! Today, I went to buy my mother toilet paper at 6am and the local grocery store shelves were emptied. Do not fear, as I found it later at a different store. Later today, mom tasked me with finding eggs. That took two different stores as well before I found them!  But, this is a time not to panic.  It is a time to pull together and support each other.   Many are recovering uneventfully–we just don’t hear about it.  I have seen numerous patients over the past month that may have had it.  I couldn’t test them because of a lack of kits, but they all recovered.  Of course some are very sick and dying.  Overall, I believe we will come through this with a death rate similar or slightly higher than the rate for the

Why Does S. Korea Have Lower Death Rate Compared to the US?

March 14, 2020

South Korea was one of the first countries affected by Coronavirus after China. Their first case occurred January 20, 2020. The number of cases remained low until February 18 when the country reported 31 new cases. A few days later hundreds more were confirmed and continued to rise. At that time, S. Korea had the highest number of COVID-19 patients outside of China. (1) By February 27, with a few hundred cases of COVID-19 reported, S. Korea had tested over 66,000 people while the US had tested just 445. (2)
How did this not spiral out of control like it has in the US? In later January, just after the first case, S. Korea procured a massive amount of tests. When the infection spread in February, S. Korean health agencies were

Coronavirus: We Are Ready and You Can Be Ready Too!

March 13, 2020

For over 25 years my office, The Center for Holistic Medicine  located in West Bloomfield, MI, has been effectively treating viral infections. The last few days I have seen the panic that is occurring: schools are closing, college students sent home, and all large events are being cancelled. Rather than a time to panic, this is a time to reflect on our health care system and how to ensure that your immune system is ready to fight COVID-19 (the present coronavirus infection).
Conventional medicine’s approach to COVID-19 is suboptimal. They can offer hand washing and quarantining. That is about it. Really, it is pathetic!!
At my office, we are not worried about COVID-19. As I mentioned above, we have been successfully treating

Why COVID-19 Is More Deadly to the Chinese

March 10, 2020

I have written five previous blog posts about coronavirus. In those posts I told you that I thought the final mortality rate in the US for COVID-19 would be comparable to the flu mortality rate. Right now, the COVID-19 mortality rate is very high—around 2%. The flu mortality rate is estimated to be approximately 0.01% per year. My reasoning for lowering the mortality rate for COVID-19 was that not enough sick people have been tested. The tests in the US have been rationed to very sick and dying individuals.
In China, at the start of the crises, I would imagine the same phenomenon was going on—only the very sick were tested. Therefore, those that had COVID-19 and convalesced at home were not included in the data. That would skew

The Epic Failure at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

March 7, 2020

I just finished a busy week seeing patients. During this time, I saw at least six patients who had flu-like illnesses. Did they have COVID-19? I don’t know. Why don’t I know? I can’t tell my patients if the are sick with coronavirus because there are no test kits available to me.  However, test kits are widely available in many other countries including Iran, Japan, South Korea, Germany, or China. In fact, hundreds of thousands of coronavirus tests have been run in other countries.
But, NOT in the US.
As of Monday, March 2, 2020, the US has tested a few hundred people for coronavirus. According to the CDC, 337 more kits were released on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
Why are other countries able to test for coronavirus and we

How to Prevent Corona Virus? Avoid the Flu Shot

February 28, 2020

I recently posted a third blog post on coronavirus (‘Corona Virus Part III: Say It Ain’t So!’ 2.26.20) I was not planning to write another one so soon but that changed when I saw the report in the New York Times. The headline in the February 25, 2020 article in the New York Times article reads, “How to prepare for the Coronavirus.” Right below the headline, in large font, it states, “Wash your hands. Keep a supply of medicines. Get a flu shot.”
I have no problems with the idea of washing hands. That is a good antimicrobial technique. As for keeping a supply of medications, the author of the article is making the point of having a 30-day supply of medications on hand in case you cannot go out to get them. I have no issue with that

Heart Disease Roars Back: Why?

January 20, 2020

The Wall Street Journal published (1.15.20) a front-page article titled, “Heart Disease Roars Back, Even in Healthy Places.” (1) The article reports, “Americans are dying of heart disease and stroke at a rising rate in middle age, normally considered the prime years of life.”
How can that be? We have spent untold trillions of dollars fighting this scourge. Americans spend more on health care than any other people on the planet, yet these are the headlines we are faced with.
I am not surprised by this article. I have been writing to you for over two decades about this issue. Conventional medicine and the Big Pharma Cartel have worked hard to erroneously convince us that high cholesterol levels are the reason why we have so much

2020 Clincial Guidelines on Testosterone Therapy: Bad Medicine

January 13, 2020

The American College of Physicians (ACP) just released (January 7, 2020) new guidelines on testosterone therapy that was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (1). The authors stated, “The ACP Clinical Guidelines Committee based these recommendations on a systematic review on the efficacy and safety of testosterone treatment in adult men with age-related low testosterone. The target audience is all clinicians and adult men with age-related low testosterone.”
It sounds like the ACP studied the issue thoroughly which should lead to reasonable recommendations for physicians to follow.
In a perfect world, that’s how it should be. However, this a far from perfect world.
Recommendation 1a: ACP suggests that clinicians discuss

Water Fluoridation: A Good Way To Lower IQ

December 20, 2019

Fluoride has been added to our public water supplies since the 1950s. It was added because the Powers-That-Be assured us that it would lower cavity rates and cause no harm. After 70 years of adding fluoride to our water supplies, I can now state, with certainty that fluoridated water does not significantly reduce cavity rates and it is associated with serious health problems.
When you compare fluoridated with non-fluoridated countries, there is virtually no difference in cavity rates.   Right now, the US is probably the most fluoridated country in the world. Most Western countries have looked at the science behind fluoridation and stopped using it. Nearly every other Western country has looked at the science behind water

WSJ Article on Flu Shots: Perfect Example of Fake News!

November 19, 2019

My friend Brad texted me during the Michigan-Michigan State football game yesterday telling me I have to read the flu shot article in the WSJ and write about it. Well, I got home from the BIG Michigan victory (Go Blue!) and promptly read the November 16, 2019 article. This article must have been supplied to the WSJ writer by Big Pharma as this was nothing more than a promotional spot for why we should be vaccinated against the flu.
Let me give you my opinion and the true facts behind the flu vaccine then you can make an informed choice on whether to receive the flu vaccination or not. When you decide, please post your comments on my blog or email me at [email protected] I love hearing from my readers whether you agree with

Measles Amnesia is Giving Me a Headache!

November 5, 2019

Measles has become the cause célèbre for conventional medicine and mainstream media in order to convince us that we need the measles vaccine. Furthermore, the Powers-That-Be are using everything they can about measles to stop any anti-vaccination talk.
Let’s get some FACTS straight! Measles can be deadly. So can chickenpox. However, for the vast majority of us—over 99%–measles (and chickenpox) is not deadly. For the person who gets it, it is an annoyance that lasts about a week. Then, there is life-long immunity from measles (and the same is true with chickenpox). However, a complication from the measles virus can occur. Even death can occur. Every death is tragic and we should do all we can to avoid suffering such a fate from

Steroid Injections Are Bad Medicine

October 30, 2019

In medical school, I was trained to inject steroids into arthritic joints. The steroids did provide some relief from arthritic pain. I was taught that three injections per joint were safe and would cause no harm.
Well, chalk that up to being taught another wrong thing in medical school.
A study in the October 15, 2019 edition of Radiology looked at data from over 450 patients who received intra-articular steroid injections for osteoarthritis at Boston University. The researchers found steroid joint injections speed up arthritis and worsen joint destruction.
“We are now seeing these {steroid} injections can be very harmful to the joints with serious complications such as osteonecrosis, subchondral insufficiency fracture, and rapid

Should You Get A Flu Shot?

October 21, 2019

Just as you can be sure that the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, you can count on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to encourage everybody to receive the flu vaccine.
Folks, this is flu season. Here is the 2019 CDC campaign to convince us all to the get the flu shot:

Folks, the ineffectiveness of the flu vaccine was nothing new—unfortunately, this is the norm. You see, the flu virus mutates every year and to expect the flu vaccine to match the circulating strains is ridiculous.
And, the flu vaccine is not a benign medical intervention. There are side effects to receiving the flu vaccine including serious neurological problems like Guillain-Barre syndrome. The flu vaccine is the most compensated vaccine for vaccine injuries from the

Alzheimer’s Drugs: Toxic Failures

October 14, 2019

Aricept is a commonly prescribed drug for treating Alzheimer’s disease. However, like all the Alzheimer’s drugs, Aricept does not work for the vast majority who take it. In my opinion, for the few who achieve some benefit with Aricept, the positive effects are minute and fleeting.
An article on Medscape.com (9.19.2019) was titled, “Alzheimer’s Drug Linked to Potentially Serious Muscle Condition.” The article reported on new data that found Aricept is associated with a 2x higher risk for hospital admission for rhabdomyolysis.   Rhabdomyolysis is a life-threatening condition in which muscle cells break down which can lead to kidney failure and death. But wait, there is more! Unfortunately, there are many other potentially serious

Why Acetaminophen Should be Minimized or Avoided

August 21, 2019

Acetaminophen is sold over-the-counter in such products such as Tylenol® and more than 100 other over-the-counter products.  Nearly every American is familiar with acetaminophen as it is recommended in Big Pharma ads to be used for pain and fever.  The ads make it seem like the drug is safe to use.
Acetaminophen is not safe.
In fact, acetaminophen can be very toxic to the liver, even with low doses.  You see, acetaminophen, once in the body is metabolized in the liver to N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI).  Glutathione, the main detoxifying substance in the liver is utilized to break down NAPQI because NAPQI is toxic to the liver.  The more acetaminophen one takes, the more NAPQI is formed, and the more glutathione is needed

From Vaccines to Statins

July 10, 2019

An article (jamacardiology_navar_2019_vp_190009) in the June, 2019 edition of JAMA Cardiology was titled, “Fear-Based Medical Misinformation and Disease Prevention: From Vaccines to Statins. In this article,[i] the author states “fake medical news” as the reason that patients are exhibiting hesitancy about utilizing statins and vaccines.
The author correctly points out that in 1963, before the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine was licensed, there were 3-4 million people who contracted measles each year. The immunization campaign which utilizes the MMR vaccine has decreased the incidence of measles. The author blames vaccine refusers for fueling outbreaks of measles. Yes, the recent outbreak in measles has been primarily in the

Cholesterol Lowering Medications and Vaccines Are Safe?

May 31, 2019

In part I of this series, I wrote about why Repatha should be pulled from the marketplace. In that article, I showed you that both Repatha and the fake placebo used in the study were both associated with nearly 25% serious adverse effects including hospitalization, death, and disability. Recall that in the fake placebo, polysorbate 20 was a main ingredient. I surmised that perhaps the high rate of serious adverse effects in the fake placebo was due to the polysorbate 20. Please refer to my original blog from May 3rd, 2019 “New Cholesterol-Lowering Medications Associated with 25% SEVERE Adverse Effects!”
Polysorbate is used widely in medicines as a dispersing agent—it helps the medicine absorb better. Polysorbate 80 is also found

New Cholesterol-Lowering Medications

May 9, 2019

I have always enjoyed having medical students in my office as I like teaching. This week, I had a pleasant 4th year medical student, Andrea. The first day Andrea showed up to my office, I handed her a New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) article about statin drugs.[i] This is an important article that gave statin drugs the indication to use in a healthy population. I asked her to explain how the authors of the article came to their conclusions and I requested that she do her own statistical analysis and report back to me. When I reviewed the article with Andrea I showed her a different way to look at and dissect the article. Specifically, I pointed out how the conclusions in the article are not supported by the data in the

A National Emergency of Measles Infections?

April 22, 2019

The main stream media and the rest of the Powers-That-Be have been leading the charge that we have a measles epidemic this year. You would think that tens of thousands must be infected and dying from measles. Well, you would think wrong. According to the CDC, from January 1 to April 11, 2019 there have been 555 cases of measles across the US. Keep in mind, there are over 323,000,000 citizens in the US. In 2010 there were 667 cases of measles. And, in 2010, there was no national emergency called with draconian, criminal penalties for the failure to vaccinate against measles.
Is measles contagious? Of course it is. Is measles deadly? Of course it is, but not in the USA for the vast majority of us. In fact, death from measles

Iodine Deficiency 2019

February 27, 2019

In medical school, I was taught that iodine deficiency was a thing of the past. It took me a short time into my holistic practice of medicine to realize that what I was taught about iodine was incorrect. In fact, I have been writing about iodine and its importance to health for nearly 15 years. When I started researching iodine in the late 1990s, I was shocked to discover that iodine deficiency was still occurring across the United States. When I began testing my patient’s iodine levels I found the vast majority—over 97%–were iodine deficient and most were severely iodine deficient.
At that time, I asked myself, “How and why could this be happening?” As I researched more and more about iodine the answers became clear. Iodine

NY Times Editorial on Vaccines

January 22, 2019

(Note: My wife vetoed my initial headline: Failing New York Times Op-Ed Full of Fake Vaccine News.  She claims that my sense of humor does not translate to all.)
The lead New York Times (NYT) editorial today is titled, “Know The Enemy.” According to the NYT, the “enemy” is anyone who questions the safety and efficacy of any vaccine.
I guess that makes me the enemy. I thought I was a board-certified physician trying to read and decipher the research on vaccines to help guide my patients on how to make their best health care decisions.
The NYT states, “Leading global health threats typically are caused by the plagues and perils of low-income countries — but vaccine hesitancy is as American as can be.” Both parts of that sentence

More Fake Flu News

January 9, 2019

The headline in the January 5, 2019 edition of the Wall Street Journal reads “Six Feet, 48 Hours, 10 Days:  How to Avoid the Flu.”[i]  This article, like nearly all main stream media flu articles was written to scare the reader into getting the flu vaccine.  A with most mainstream medical articles about the flu, it is filled with fake news.  Let’s analyze the article.
The author starts off by writing, “After a slow start, the flu season has taken off.”   Between Christmas and New Years Day, there was a marked rise in flu illnesses across the U.S.
So far, no fake news to report.
However, as with most main stream media influenza stories, the writer misstates the true numbers of Americans who die from the flu.  “In a mild year,

Why You Should Avoid Another Lousy Flu Drug

December 12, 2018

A new medication has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat influenza.  Xofluza (Baloxavir).  It is an antiviral medication approved in October, 2018, by the FDA to treat infections from influenza A and B.  Studies have shown it may reduce the duration of influenza symptoms by about 24 hours.
Xofluza is the latest anti-influenza medication approved by the FDA.   The earlier anti-flu medications are neuraminidase inhibiters.  I wrote to you about the failure of this class of drugs in a previous blog post (https://www.drbrownstein.com/forget-tamiflu/).  Tamiflu, working by a different medication than Xofluza, was shown to decrease influenza symptoms by about 21 hours.
As I said in that earlier post, “Folks, I
